Being kind to my mind
For the Earth Day weekend I put work aside. Designs simmered in the back of my mind. I basked in the mild spring weather. I didn't use internal combustion transportation. I read parts of a favorite book. I made no purchases. I dozed with the cat.
Monday was mostly walking errands and wading through email. Tuesday I sat down at my computer, checked email, and read news before realizing with a start that the electricity was off. It came back on about fifteen minutes later. Not long, but I was thankful for my laptop!
I've been trying different additions to a new design, but nothing has really caught my fancy. Some of my favorite work has come from this kind of tinkering, so it's still time well spent. That said, the simpler version seems best. If all goes well, I'll have it on items at JamieCo Design later today.
Over the weekend a fan wrote that she's glad I plan to continue publishing icons, although she can no longer use them. (Her Mac died and she's stuck with Windows.) "GLBTI(etc)-themed GUI elements are rare enough. Well-designed ones are even rarer."
A couple nights ago, some of our boys asked me to choose which of their new books each should read first, then read to us from them (and very well, I might add). One found this quote:
The most important political step that any gay man or lesbian can take is to come out of the closet. It's been proven that it is easier to hate us and to fear us if you can't see us.Last night a guy who has switched to a Mac messaged me. He is figuring out how to do things on his new system, so we stepped through changing folder icons and I gave him some URLs where he could find gaming icons. Turns out he's involved in gayhiphop.com.~Amanda Bearse
Little everyday events like this just fuel my resolve to keep my GLBT/Ally designs visible.
